What NASA Says:
The following is a direct quote from page 61 of Spinoff 1994, a NASA publication.

"A new way of cleaning up oil spills "bioremediation" is being marketed by Petrol Rem, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Invented by Petrol Rem... the product is known as PRP® for Petroleum Remediation Product. It incorporates technology related to fabrication of microcapsules developed by Marshall Space Flight Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory."

"For cleaning up an oil spill, PRP is used in conjunction with an apparatus also developed by Petrol Rem. The BioBoom® is an oil spill containment system available in a number of sizes or tailored to a user's requirements. The BioBoom has a flotation device that keeps the boom on top of the water and prevents the oil from spreading into nonpolluted water."

"Work performed at Jet Propulsion Laboratory demonstrated the feasibility of encapsulating live cells and Petrol Rem … employed that technology in developing PRP. Technology developed at Marshall Space Flight Center for experiments in orbital production of microspheres provided the basic design of the delivery system."

"In their continuing efforts to improve and adapt it's products for other applications, Petrol Rem has developed a second generation of PRP which totally utilizes indigenous microbial populations." PRP has been nominated for the NASA Hall of Fame.

NOTE: UniRemInc was established in 2004, formerly known and PetrolRem.

What the EPA Says:
The following is a quote from the EPA: EPA Management Measures for Petroleum Control Section 4.7 (PDF File)

"In independent tests by the National Environmental Technology Applications Corporation (NETAC), oil pollutants treated with the agent were reduced by up to 98 percent within 8 weeks."
